Juster Pope Frazier

The design of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art takes its visual expression from the work of Eric Carle. The museum offers a wide array of creative programs and exhibits supported by galleries, auditorium, arts studio, cafe, bookshop, library, archival storage and offices. Completed in 2002, 43,000 square feet, total construction cost of $11,300,000.00. Construction Manager for the project was Daniel O’Connell of Holyoke, MA. Like many of our projects, Juster Pope Frazier provided architectural design, interior design and landscape design services. The project received a 2004 regional AIA Design Award.

The Luso design utilzes a long southern orientation to provide daylighting throughout the building. Building forms evolved in order to provide deep southern overhangs working in concert with a “brise soleil”. Completed in 2008, 15,000 square feet in area, total construction cost $3,250,000.00. General Contractor for the project was LN Berneche of Chicopee MA.

Located directly adjacent to route 91 in Springfield, MA. The design of the Visitor Center is meant to create a strong visual “beacon” when viewed from the elevated highway. Utilizing a simple palette of materials, brick, aluminum and glass, the Visitor Center was awarded a 2004 WMAIA Honors Award for its design. Beyond the architectural design, Juster Pope Frazier also provided interior design, exhibit design and landscape design services. The project was built by Eastern General Contractors of Springfield MA.

This project involved the complete gutting of the interiors of an abandoned and cavernous former supermarket while maintaining the exterior building shell. The deep recesses of the former box are punctuated with large skylights bringing daylight deep into the interiors. The exterior design incorporates a new horizontal steel structure to provide a new entry and to shade a large expanse of south facing glass. The building houses medical and dental suites, administrative offices and a pharmacy. The 18,000 gross s.f. renovation was completed in 2008 for $2,850,000.00 by DA Sullivan, General Contractors. The project received a 2010 WMAIA Design Award. Juster Pope Frazier provided architectural design, landscape design and interior design services.

Wesley Church is sited in the midst of an eleven acre field, eight acres of which have been placed in a permanent agricultural easement. This site is in the midst of a collection of classic New England tobacco barns. The design of Wesley lies grounded in the integration of contextural agrarian forms and landscape within Christian basilica iconography. The 15,000 gross square foot church was completed in 2006 for $152.00 per square foot.

Juster Pope Frazier developed an athletics master plan for Nichols, this project is the first phase of that master plan. Like much of Nichols College, the existing building is sited on a steep hillside. Renovation and new construction connected seven different levels of program space while integrating a new athletics training room, aerobics room, coaching offices and recruiting center. Renovation work included new locker room configurations, new student fitness center, new weight room and new locker rooms. Juster Pope Frazier made use of “found” space which had been used for a long abandoned swimming pool saving the client construction costs while using previously unused areas.

Founder’s Hall opened in 2015, seventeen years after the completion of our first building on campus in 1999. This Arts and Academics Center includes a 350 seat performing arts theater (with full fly, orchestra pit and lighting catwalks) band and choral studios, art studios, computer laboratory, academic classrooms, administrative offices and a reception hall /lobby directly adjacent to the theater. The building is 50,000 sf. with a contract cost of $13,300,000.00.

Completed in 1999, this was our first project at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Thus began a working relationship that continues to this day. The Ryken Center was the first new building since initial construction in 1963. It houses a 125 seat lecture hall, black box theater, robotics maker space, science labs, computer labs and the school library.

Scheduled for bidding in late November 2023, this facility is all new construction of a 55,000 athletics and wellness center. It feature four new multipurpose courts, strength and agility training space, locker rooms, coaching office and athletic training spaces.

The Saint John’s Robotics Lab is located in the lower level of our Ryken Center building. Once we completed Founders’ Hall, space in the Ryken Center was freed up for renovation work. The Robotics Lab is one of those spaces. Completed as a “summer slammer” in 2017 the space has proven to be a very active and popular destination for students with a technology focus.

Completed in 2014, the Nichols Academic Building achieved Gold Level LEED certification. The building is 30,000 square feetin area with an $8,750,000.00 construction cost. The building features several team based learning classrooms, a green screen video production suite, faculty offices, large central atrium gathering space and the Institute for Women’s Leadership. One of four primary repeat clients, we have been working continuously at Nichols College since 2006 and have been responsible for over sixty million dollars in new and renovated construction in the campus core.

The Fels Student Center provides a social center for Nichols College, an 1100 student college located in a rural setting. The campus center includes a student lounge, coffee shop, bookstore, trading room, radio station, post office, student affairs offices, administration offices, and several classrooms. Located at the geographic center of campus, this meeting place between the lower residential campus and the upper academic campus is truly the center of student activity while improving the overall campus aesthetic considerably. The 30,000 s.f. Fels Student Center was completed in November 2011 and a construction cost of $8,000,000.00. General Contractor for the project was Lauring Construction of Worcester, MA.

Nichols College Copper Beech Quad integrates Silver Level Leed design into tow new suite style residence halls. Each building houses 66 students with common room areas, kitchenettes, laundries and study rooms. The project is heated and cooled usting geothermal systems. Completed in 2009, total construction cost of approximately $54,000 per bed/$7,200,000.00.

The Lombard Dining Hall project was a four year long project built out over six phases in order to keep the existing food services in full time operation. The design utilized most all of the existing structure with some provisions for expansion and reconfiguration of the main elevations. Interiors were fully gutted, and rebuilt with an atrium ceiling to enhance the student dining experience. All new serving stations were integrated with demonstration stations for cooking.

Juster Pope Frazier has maintained a working relationship with Elms College for the last decade plus. Working within a beautiful college campus, our work here is meant to be respectful and reverent of the buildings that populate the campus. The Lyons Center is approximately 22,000 sf in area wlithin a tightly configured five story buidling. Spaces include several science laboratories, nursing simulation and training floor, 65 person auditorium, computer labs, collaborative classrooms and break out spaces.

Located at the very heart of Berchmans Hall, the Saint Joseph Chapel is an adaptive restoration project. Berchmans was the original academic building at Elms College, built in 1929, and this space was originally designed as the College Library. Juster Pope Frazier was hired to restore the original space into a new chapel. Restoration work included the large central two story stained glass, stenciling and painting, regarding of the arched ceiling, integration of stained glass from the former chapel and integration of contemporary lighting and HVAC in a manner which respected the existing craftsmanship.

Juster Pope Frazier was hired to review development options on this historic building at the former Northampton State Hospital grounds. The developer was interested in build out for the basement and first floor levels. We identified the attic space as a possible third floor for consideration. The result are these two high end apartments integrated amongst the original attic timber framing.

DA Sullivan and Sons, Inc. was founded in 1898. They have a strong and well deserved reputation as one of the finest general contractors in western and central Massachusetts. They have worked with a huge range of architects over the years, including several projects with Juster Pope Frazier.

In 2004, they chose to commission Juster Pope Frazier to provide design services to expand and renovate their historic building in downtown Northampton. We successfully integrated new construction and utilities within the existing historic fabric of the building to create office spaces which honors both the past history of DAS and highlights the skill of their craftsmen.

In 2008, Juster Pope Frazier moved their own studio into this same building and in 2014 the Eric Carle Studio was added to the roster of occupants with designs also provided by Juster Pope Frazier. Our ongoing relationship with DA Sullivan and this building has allowed us the opportunity to create a wholistic identity for the design in a manner which strengthens the overall aesthetic of the entire building. We are enormously grateful to DAS for their belief in our skills.

New 15,000 square foot addition and 4,000 square foot renovation providing new robotics/maker space with computer labs, technology classrooms, choral classroom, digital media lab. Renovated areas include new spaces for Band and Theater.

The design focuses on daylight harvesting through the use of curtain wall with deep overhanging soffits and sun shades. The site was tightly constructed by existing parking and driveways coupled with a seven foot change in elevation from west to east. Effort was made to integrate the new addition into the existing campus architecture through the spacing of curtain wall mullions; integration of punched windows matching the adjacent building, and matching brick and coursing.

Construction began in July 2022 and was completed in mid August 2023. FW Madigan Inc. was the construction manager, delivering the project on time with just over $100,000.00 returned back to the owner in savings on the GMP.

The schematic design for this proposed new dining commons grew out of Juster Pope Frazier’s South Campus Master Plan commissioned by The Woodstock Academy. The South Campus, largely built out in 1963, features simple large masonry buildings arrayed about without a clear campus center and social space. This project creates a new community focus by relocating parking out of the campus center allowing for creation of a new quadrangle. The proposed dining hall then fronts on the quadrangle serving not only as the social center for the campus but also as a gateway building for visitors.

Clark University commissioned Juster Pope Frazier to reimagine their lecture halls on campus with a goal to integrate technology, aesthetics and branding. This initial stage serves as a tool to further engage, and, hopefully, inspire the Clark faculty to see their lecture halls not only as a teaching tool but also as a key component of a collaborative approach to learning and community outreach.

Juster Pope Frazier has completed twelve fire stations across a wide range of departments, urban to rural.

Juster Pope Frazier has a substantial portfolio of master planning work with a recent emphasis on private girls schools such as Miss Halls School and Stoneleigh Burnham School. Our collaborative outreach heightened by our strong emphasis on listening to our clients, and, creating a venue where all participants are heard, has led us to seek more master planning work. We consider this work to be a privilege and fully understand the leap of faith clients make in entrusting this process to Juster Pope Frazier.

We take greater pride in our ability to listen to clients rather than talk to our clients. As Architects we view our process as a means of translating a client’s aspirations into built form and materials. Generally, most all of our projects evolve from early conversations into hand sketches. These original sketches then serve as benchmarks to go back to during further phases of design and construction documents.
